Profit Mapping Project

About three-quarters of the land in the Grand River watershed is in agricultural production, which gives farmers a significant role to play in the health of our watershed.  We work closely with farmers through programs such as the Rural Water Quality Program, that encourages the adoption of best practices to benefit the environment.

In 2020 we initiated a profitability mapping demonstration project. Profitability mapping is a precision agriculture tool that combines yield and crop input data costs to create a series of maps to help farmers visualize their profits across a field.

The project aims to demonstrate profit mapping as a tool to help identify areas of a field where management practice changes could improve profitability.

Producers are provided with a series of maps based on previous years crop data. They then work with a Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) who makes recommendations to address the less profitable areas of a field. This could be increased soil testing to diagnose problem areas, or changes to the type, location, timing and rate that nutrients are applied. It could also be changes to seeding rates or tillage practices, adding cover crops, erosion control structures and more.

Maximizing nutrient use efficiency and minimizing soil loss are good for farm sustainability and watershed health.

The project is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA).
