Flood events

Flooding in the Grand River watershed can occur anywhere, at any time, for many reasons. Flooding often occurs in low-lying areas near rivers and streams during late spring and early fall when weather conditions are most active, but can also occur any time throughout the year.

There have been a number of significant flooding events in the Grand River watershed over the past 70 years. While these events can cause damage to properties and inconvenience to residents, each of these events is an opportunity to learn more about how our environment impacts the watershed.

Many of the flood control infrastructure measures and communications protocols that help keep residents safer today are a result of lessons learned from previous signficant flooding events.
