GRCA Flood Message #5 – Flood Warning

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) is issuing a Flood Warning message for the City of Brantford, Six Nations of the Grand River and Haldimand County. The Flood Warning messages previously issued for Grand Valley, Waldemar, Drayton, West Montrose, the Village of Conestogo, City of Kitchener, City of Cambridge, New Hamburg, and Ayr remain in effect.

A mixed precipitation event resulted in greater than 100 mm of total precipitation in many areas and increased runoff causing flooding in some parts of the Grand River watershed. While the weather system has passed, river flows will continue to increase in the Grand River south of Brantford over the weekend as water makes its way downstream.

Flood Warning Message for the City of Brantford

The Grand River through the City of Brantford is expected to peak late evening or overnight tonight, Friday, April 4, causing flooding in low-lying areas, such as Gilkison Street. Municipal flood coordinators in the City of Brantford have been advised to notify affected properties and monitor conditions.

Flood Warning Message for Six Nations of the Grand River

The Grand River through Six Nations is expected to peak Saturday, April 5, in the early morning and will result in flooding in the area of 4th Line and Bateman Line. Municipal flood coordinators at Six Nations of the Grand River have been advised to notify affected properties and monitor conditions.

Flood Warning Message for Haldimand County

River flows are expected to peak in York on Saturday, April 5, in the afternoon and will result in flooding of low-lying areas including Fife Street in Caledonia, Ouse Street in Cayuga, Sims Lock Road, and Grand Sports Road. Municipal flood coordinators in Haldimand County have been advised to notify affected properties and monitor conditions.

Flood Warning Message for Ayr

The Nith River in Ayr is expected to peak in Flood Warning Zone 2 in the evening on Friday, April 4. Municipal flood coordinators in the Township of North Dumfries are advised to continue monitoring conditions. Residents are encouraged to refer to the guide on the GRCA’s website for information regarding flood warning zones.

The Flood Warning messages issued for West Montrose, the Village of Conestogo, City of Kitchener, and City of Cambridge remain in effect. River flows in these areas remain elevated. While no further flooding is currently anticipated, flood coordinators and residents in these municipalities should continue to monitor conditions as needed.

The Flood Warning messages issued for Grand Valley, Waldemar, Drayton, and New Hamburg remain in effect. While river flows have peaked and are slowly receding, flood coordinators and residents should remain vigilant.

This message will remain in effect until 12 p.m. on Monday, April 7, 2025.

River conditions and forecasts are being monitored closely and updates to this message will be issued if necessary. Additional guides and resources are available on the GRCA’s website.

GRCA Reservoirs

The GRCA’s multi-purpose reservoirs were operated to reduce the impact of downstream flooding during this event. Stored water is gradually being released to return the reservoirs to their normal level for this time of year.

Stay safe

Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with local municipal flood response programs and be prepared for flooding due to the elevated risk at this time.

Banks adjacent to local waterways are very slippery and, when combined with cold, fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard. Parents are reminded to keep children and pets away from all waterbodies.
