Funding available for living snow fences in Dufferin County

As temperatures get cooler and winter approaches, residents in the northern portions of the Grand River watershed still have an opportunity to plan for a living snow fence project next spring.

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) and Dufferin County support living snow fence tree planting projects in priority locations along county roads. Eligible participants can receive up to 100 per cent funding toward the cost of installing a living snow fence on their property. In some instances a financial incentive is also offered for farmland taken out of production.

What is a living snow fence?

A living snow fence is a row of trees planted adjacent to roadways which will help improve winter driving conditions and reduce snow removal costs. A strategically placed row of trees planted 30m back from the edge of the road, and generally on the north or west side, traps snow that blows across open fields during the winter and can help decrease snow drift accumulation on the roadway.

Visit the Landowner Resources section of the GRCA website at www.grandriver.ca/LandownerResources to learn more. This webpage features a video created by the GRCA, in collaboration with Dufferin County staff, discussing the many benefits of having a living snow fence on your property.
