Conestoga College students break ground at Guelph Lake
It may not be a typical groundbreaking ceremony, but students from the Conestoga College Heavy Construction Equipment Operation program had plenty to celebrate when they began working on the grounds of the future Guelph Lake Nature Centre last Tuesday.
Approximately 40 students from the college will be working on the site until June 2, using a range of heavy equipment to help the Grand River Conservation Authority construct an access road, parking lot, and school bus turning circle. These features will serve as the future entrance to the facility, expected to open in fall 2020.
This unique partnership provides the students with an opportunity to gain real-life construction experience while providing a substantial donation of in-kind labour toward the project.
“We are so proud of the students working on this project” says Sara Wilbur, Grand River Conservation Foundation Executive Director. “Their efforts will help save approximately $30,000 in site development costs. These savings will ultimately help bring us closer to our $2.5 million fundraising target for the new centre”.
This work will not affect park operations at Guelph Lake. For more information on the new Guelph Lake Nature Centre project, visit www.grcf.ca.
